We have been building drones /flying robots) since 2010. Our hexacopters are able to fly in the university and on the field. We have been using the drones mainly for collaborating with archeologists and with biologists. In the case of the first, we are able to fly around an excavation or a historical site and produce a 3D reconstructed view of the site. This is used by archeologists for documentation purposes.
With the biologists we are investigating navigation strategies, such as used by insects, as a basis for navigation with drones. We can, for example, use optical flow and computer vision in order to localize a robot on the field and fulfill a mission. We are now also collaborating with companies which want to use drones for inspection of towers and bridges.
